About Scottish Treasures…

The word treasure is often used to describe something, or even someone, that one loves, values, and keeps close to the heart. Certainly, a treasure, whether individual or collective, is one that is cherished, protected and entrusted to others for safekeeping. My Scottish ancestry, first introduced to the family by my father, has always been of value to us, though admittedly our interest and participation was intermittent over the years. But the seeds he planted took root and bloomed into a new rekindled love for all things Scottish. With his passing, we realize the legacy he has left our family, and do our best to honor it now, and going forward. Another family member that also provided inspiration for the website, and shares its name, is our first Golden Retriever, Treasure. So we have chosen to make her the unofficial mascot for our site,  to remind us to treasure those we love every day and honor the memory of those that are no longer with us.  Which brings us to what we believe are the true treasures of Scotland, both present and past – its people.  For hundreds of years the Scottish people have endured much, and given much. Their art, music, literature, technology, folklore, history - all of these form the foundation of a Scottish culture that has influenced the world as we know it, and given us the heritage we celebrate today.  This site is dedicated to honoring that heritage and preserving it for future generations.

This is Treasure

We decided to make Treasure, my first Golden Retriever, the site mascot because she inspired our choice of names for the website. When I first started thinking about a website to explore and share my interest and love for Scottish culture and heritage, I wanted to make it not just a collection of facts, but a collaboration of what we all know and enjoy about Scottish culture, both past and present. Are these not the things we have come to treasure?  What we treasure individually or collectively is what touches our heart. So like my golden Treasure, my Scottish treasures and friends are dear to me. Every ‘Scottish’ thing I have learned or experienced has become part of me, and in the process, I have become part of a larger, extended Scottish community…one that shares a mutual interest and fascination for Scotland and its treasures.

Footnote:
Treasure passed away in 2000. My next Golden was Sassy, and then Hannah, but both of them have passed on as well.  My current ‘fur kid’ is not a Golden, but none the less Scottish. Brodie is a Border Collie mix.
